At one stage of the hearing, the judge asked the former CEC, “Did you break your oath?” In response, Nurul Huda said, “No, I did not break my oath.”
Nurul Huda said, “The Election Commission is formed with five members, and the election is conducted with 1.6 million manpower. It is not possible to sit in Dhaka and watch the voting in remote areas.”
The judge then said, “You have taken an oath to hold a fair election. What measures have you taken if there are irregularities in the voting?”
In response, KM Nurul Huda said, “The returning officer announces the results. The High Court can stop the election. The Election Commission cannot do anything. As a result, even if the election is controversial, the commission cannot be held responsible.”
After the hearing, the court ordered former Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda to be remanded for four days.
It is worth noting that BNP has filed a case alleging irregularities and rigging in the three national elections held during the Awami League government. A total of 24 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former Chief Election Commissioners, have been named as accused in the case. On Sunday, BNP National Executive Committee member Md. Salahuddin Khan filed the case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital.
