Serbian Prime Minister resigns amid student protests

Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vuković has resigned in the face of strong protests and pressure from student movements. He announced his resignation on Tuesday (January 28).

According to the Guardian, students blocked a key road in the capital Belgrade on Monday. Farmers also joined in, and the demand for Prime Minister Vukevic’s resignation grew stronger after the road blockade.

The students began the protest, alleging corruption, after 15 people were killed when the roof of a railway station in the city of Novi Sad collapsed on November 15. They claimed that such a disaster could have been avoided if there had been corruption during the construction of the station.

In this situation, President Aleksandar Vukic discussed with the protesters yesterday and announced major changes to the government. The students then blocked the main road in the capital Belgrade, the Autokomanda junction, bringing the capital to a standstill.

After the protest in November, attacks on students began every day. But the movement did not subside, and at one point it spread to more than 100 cities. One by one, officials from the judiciary, teachers, businessmen and ordinary people began to support the movement.

When the students blocked the road yesterday, farmers came forward to help them. They arrived there with their huge tractors.

The country’s Minister of Communications, Goran Vesic, was forced to resign immediately after a railway station roof collapsed, killing civilians. But despite this, students continued their protests.
