French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated German conservative leader Friedrich Merz on his party’s victory in parliamentary elections on Sunday and stressed the need for unity in these uncertain times.
AFP reported from Paris. “We are more determined than ever to achieve great things together for France and Germany and to work for a strong and sovereign Europe,” Macron said in a post on social media.
In these uncertain times, he said, we are united in facing the great challenges facing the world and our continent. Macron will travel to Washington on Monday. He hopes to persuade US President Donald Trump to include European leaders in any solution to the war in Ukraine.
Trump stunned Europe by announcing his readiness to resume diplomacy with Russian President Vladimir Putin and negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine without the involvement of any European country or Kiev.
