RAB has arrested Liton Mia (26), an assistant to a bus driver, on charges of raping a college student on a moving bus in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj. He was arrested from Jalalpur area of Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet around 12:45 am on Monday night.
Arrested Liton Mia is a resident of Rashidpur village in Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet. He is the assistant of bus driver Sabbir Mia (25), who was arrested on charges of rape.
A press release from RAB Shayestaganj camp said that on Monday night at 12:00 am on the basis of a secret tip-off, RAB-9’s Sylhet Sadar Company and Shayestaganj camp conducted a joint operation and arrested Liton. He has been handed over to Nabiganj police station.
Last Sunday night, a passenger of a moving bus on the Nabiganj-Sherpur regional road accused the driver and his assistant of raping the college student. The victim of the incident filed a case with Nabiganj police station the next Monday morning. Bus driver Sabbir Mia was named as an accused in the case. Sabbir is a resident of Inatabad Banglabazar area of Nabiganj upazila.
According to the case report and police sources, the girl was studying in class 11 at a college in Dhaka. On Sunday afternoon, she left for her village home by bus from Sayedabad in Dhaka. She was supposed to get down in Shayestaganj, but fell asleep on the bus. Later, she got down in Sherpur area and boarded a local bus, known as ‘Ma Enterprise’. When the bus reached Aushkandi area around 10 pm, other passengers got off. At that time, bus driver Sabbir and his assistant Liton raped the girl in the moving bus. At one point, hearing the girl’s screams, people around stopped the bus in Inatabad area. Local people arrested driver Sabbir and handed him over to the police with the help of army members. However, Liton fled.
Nabiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mohammad Kamruzzaman said, “The student filed a case against the two men at Nabiganj Police Station on Monday morning alleging rape in this incident. The victim has been sent to the 250-bed district hospital in Habiganj for medical examination and treatment. Her family has also been contacted.”
