Former State Minister Palak remanded again

A court has granted a four-day remand to former ICT State Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak in a case filed over the death of Obaidul Islam in a shooting incident in the capital’s Jatrabari area during an anti-discrimination student movement. He was produced before the court on Monday (March 24) morning.

The investigating officer of the case applied for his seven-day remand in the case. Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued for the state’s remand. On the other hand, advocates Farzana Yasmin Rakhi and Tariqul Islam, representing the accused, filed an application seeking cancellation of the remand and bail. After hearing both sides, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq granted his four-day remand and issued an order.

The complaint in the case states that during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 4, around 5 pm, leaders and activists of 14 parties, including Awami League leaders, opened fire on thousands of people with illegal weapons in front of the Kajla petrol pump in Jatrabari. Obaidul Islam was shot and died. The deceased’s relative, Md. Ali, filed a case accusing 58 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader, in the incident.
