West Indies are playing a three-match ODI series with the hosts in England. In the first match of the series at Edgbaston, English pacer Jamie Overton broke his finger while taking a return catch. He was ruled out of the series on Saturday.
Overton had to leave the field immediately after injuring his finger while taking a catch with his own ball. Initially, it seemed that the finger had changed position. But after a scan, it was seen that the 31-year-old cricketer had a fracture in the little finger of his right hand.
Despite the injury, Overton returned to the field with a good taping on his finger. Later, he bowled brilliantly. He finished the match with 3 wickets for 22 runs in 5 overs, which was England’s best bowling in the match. He took the wickets of Roston Chase, Matthew Ford and Gudakesh Moti. Overton will now start a rehabilitation program under the supervision of England doctors.
Despite Overton’s injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that no substitute will be included in the ODI squad.
The second ODI of the three-match series is scheduled to be played in Cardiff on Sunday, followed by the final match at Kia Oval on Tuesday. England defeated the West Indies by a huge margin of 238 runs in the first ODI in Birmingham on Thursday. Chasing a tough target of 401, the West Indies were bowled out for just 162 in 26.2 overs.a
