Driver Malek sentenced to five years in prison, wife to three years

The court has sentenced former driver Abdul Malek, who is under discussion at the Directorate General of Health Services, to five years in prison and his wife Nargis Begum to three years in prison. They were sentenced to this punishment in a case filed by the ACC for acquiring assets undeclared. In addition to the prison sentence, each was fined Tk 20,000. The judge mentioned in the verdict that they will have to serve another three months in prison if they fail to pay the fine.

In addition, the accused have been ordered to forfeit undeclared assets worth Tk 1.1 million 93,050 in favor of the state, ACC prosecutor Asaduzzaman Rana said.

Malek was produced in court from prison when the verdict was announced. Nargis Begum, who was on bail, appeared in court. After the verdict, both of them were taken to prison with a warrant of arrest.

ACC Assistant Director Syed Nazrul Islam filed the case against Abdul Malek and his wife Nargis Begum on February 14, 2021, on charges of acquiring immovable and movable assets worth Tk 11.92 million inconsistent with the known source of income.

After investigating the case, Nazrul Islam submitted a charge sheet to the court on October 27 of the same year. On May 11, 2022, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.

Earlier, on March 23, the same court sentenced Abdul Malek to 13 years in prison under two separate sections for acquiring illegal assets.

In addition, on September 20, 2021, Abdul Malek was sentenced to 30 years in prison under two sections in a case under the Arms Act.
