Dr. Swapnil’s license suspended for 5 years

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has blamed Professor Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab Swapnil for medical negligence in the death of a patient while undergoing endoscopy at LabAid Hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

This decision was taken at the BMDC general meeting yesterday, Sunday. BMDC Disciplinary Committee Chairman Professor Dr. Ismail Patwary confirmed the matter today, Sunday.

BMDC has decided to suspend Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab Swapnil’s medical certificate for five years. As a result, he will not be able to practice medicine during this period. In addition, the certificates of 13 other doctors have been suspended for periods ranging from 6 months to 4 years.

It is learned that on November 9, 2023, Afsar Ahmed, an engineer of LGED in Chhatak Upazila of Sunamganj, died while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital. He was undergoing treatment under Dr. Swapnil and came to the hospital for an endoscopy that day. Four and a half months after his death, Afsar’s brother Khairul Bashar accused the doctor and the hospital of negligence and carelessness in treatment.

Then in February 2024, Rahib Reza, a former student of Jahangirnagar University, died while undergoing an endoscopy under the same doctor at the same hospital. The investigation by the Directorate General of Health Services held Dr. Swapnil and the LabAid authorities responsible for this death.
