5,000 kg of government rice recovered from BNP leader’s warehouse

Joint forces have recovered 104 sacks of government VGD rice from a warehouse owned by BNP leader Ali Hossain in Sarishabari, Jamalpur. The rice was recovered in a raid conducted on Tuesday (May 20) night.

The amount of rice recovered is about 5,200 kg. A case was filed against Ali Hossain, accused of illegal hoarding and black marketing, on the same night.

The warehouse owner, Md. Ali Hossain, is the president of Ward No. 8 BNP of Sarishabari Pingna Union and the son of the deceased Lal Mahmud of Basuria village. Police said that Ali Hossain, accused of illegally hoarding government rice, is absconding.

Police said that the raid was conducted around 11:30 pm on Tuesday based on a secret information. The raid was led by Sarishabari Upazila Executive Officer (Acting) and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Liza Richil and Army Lieutenant Shaharia Talukder Rifat. During the operation, 104 government-sealed 50 kg sacks designated for the government VGD program were found from a warehouse owned by Ali Hossain. Each sack contains about 5,200 kg of rice, 50 kg each. The recovered rice has been taken into police custody.

Upazila Executive Officer Liza Richil said that it is initially believed that government-issued rice was illegally stored and kept in the warehouse for the purpose of selling it in the black market. We have seized the rice and a case has been filed against the accused. Such operations will continue in the future as well.

Sarishabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rashedul Hasan said that the recovered rice has been kept in police custody. A regular case has been filed against the accused Ali Hossain and efforts are underway to arrest him.
