Four passengers on an autorickshaw have died after the vehicle was sandwiched between a truck and a covered van in Gazipur.
The incident occurred below the BRT Flyover in the Chandana intersection of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway around 11:30pm on Wednesday.
The dead are Dulal, 27, Mamun, 28, and Mamun, 24 – all identified by a single name – and Saleha Akhtar, 23. The younger Mamun hailed from Gazipur’s Bason Thana area, while Saleha was a resident of the Chandana area. Details regarding the two other victims were not immediately available.
Rahedul Islam, chief of Bason Police Station, said that a speeding truck rammed the passenger autorickshaw, pushing it into a covered van in front of it. The vehicle was then crushed between the truck and the van.
Of the passengers on the autorickshaw, Saleha died on the spot. The three others were taken to Gazipur’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where a doctor on duty declared them dead, OC Rahedul said.
Sheikh Farhad, a resident medical officer at the hospital, said: “Two people were brought to the hospital around 11pm and two more around midnight. Three were men while the fourth was a woman.”
“They were brought to the hospital dead. The bodies have been kept at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.”
After the incident, the truck driver and his helper fled, OC Rahedul said. Legal action is being taken over the incident.
